Rare Isotope Spectroscopic INvestigations at GSI-project carried out at GSI, Darmstadt (2002-2013), its follow up is the HISPEC / DESPEC experiment being currently prepared at FAIR.
Project goal:
Studies of the structure of unstable nuclei by means of gamma ray spectroscopy. Beams of radioactive ions are obtained by fragmentation of heavy projectiles (as uranium) accelerated to relativistic velocities (v / c> 50%). Exotic fragments are selected in the FRS magnetic separator and transmitted to the target where a secondary reaction takes place. It is the source of radiation being detected in gamma ray spectrometers made of semiconductor detectors (HPGe) such as EUROBALL, AGATA, and scintillators such as HECTOR+.
