Scope of work supervised by DAI division staff:

Being established in France, in locality Cadarache, experimental thermonuclear reactor is made to research the possibility of energy production by means of controlled nuclear fusion.

High Resolution Neutron Spectrometer (HRNS) is a diagnostic device. Its main purpose is to measure the ratio nt/nd (number of tritium ions to deuterium ions) in the plasma core. Currently HRNS has a status of Enabled Diagnostics which means that decision to build it will be taken at a later stage of project. Therefore, at present stage, only a conceptual design is prepared.
Involvement of DAI staff in HRNS project:

  • Lead engineer – coordination of engineering part of the project
  • CAD (computer aided design) designer
  • Thermo-hydraulic (cooling of detector) and electromagnetic (screening detector against magnetic field) analyses

Main scope of work for DAI staff was engineering part of conceptual design of HRNS. A team of physicists from IFJ PAN and Uppsala University first determined the types and sequence of 4 types of detectors necessary to diagnose the plasma for full range of power of proposed ITER reactor. Next step was the first concept of locating proposed devices in rather limited volume foreseen for HRNS in so called Equatorial Port #1. First sketches and drawing were made of construction (called Cuboid 1 and 2) enclosing proposed spectrometer which also act as a shield preventing neutron from escaping outside . Geometry of proposed detectors was enforced by physical reactions which they were supposed to register. Thus the physical distances between consecutive parts of TPR (Thin foil Proton Recoil) detector determined its overall length. Also diameter and length of ToF(Time-of-Flight) detector were prespecified by type and energy of reaction it was supposed to register. In addition it was necessary to provide essential infrastructure like, e.g. cooling system for ToF and bToF detectors , vacuum pump necessary for TPR. Also system of shielding of scintillation counters and electrical motors against stray magnetic field of ITER reaching 150 mT at the HRNS location.
Engineering team of DAI staff proposed a conceptual design of above mentioned tasks.

On 25-26.09.2017 in ITER premises in Cadarache, France, a meeting was organized to sum up Conceptual Phase of HRHS project and aimed at its formal conclusion. Around 20 people took part in this meeting representing ITER organisation, Fusion for Energy from Barcelona, Spain(principal of grant F4E-GRT-403),Uppsala University and IFJ PAN, including DAI representative performing a function of Lead Engineer in the HRNS project. Contractors of the project, IFJ PAN and Uppsala University staff, submitted 13 presentation (5 presentations by DAI representative) summing up 2,5 years of work. During closing session of this meeting, ITER reviewers underlined high quality of presented results and necessity of continuation which means moving on to Preliminary Design Phase.
