The Charter and the Code

The European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers

In 2005 the European Commission issued:

  • the European Charter for Researchers,
  • the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers.

The main addressees of these documents are:

  • researchers,
  • employers,
  • research funding bodies.

The Charter and the Code constitute the fundamental documents of the European HRS4R strategy.

The Charter and the Code contain 40 principles regulating 4 areas:
I. Ethics
II. Recruitment
III. Working conditions and social security
IV. Training

They contain rights and obligations of researchers and employers, including grant holders and project coordinators. Voluntary implementation of these principles may result in creating attractive working conditions for researchers in Europe.
