A special session dedicated to the synthesis and studies of super-heavy elements took place on August 30, 2016 at the Zakopane Conference on Nuclear Physics organized by the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The guest of honor and first lecturer of the session was Professor Yuri Oganessian from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna. Before the session a short ceremony took place to honor the accomplishments and contribution of Prof. Oganessian to the field of synthesis of super-heavy elements.
Recently a committee of the IUPAC International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry has proposed to name the new Z=118 element discovered in Dubna “Oganesson” after his name. Prof. Yuri Oganessian is a regular guest at the Zakopane Conference and a great supporter of the collaboration of Polish physicists with the Joint Institute in Dubna.
